SUBIOS
2006, the Underwater Festival
SUBIOS is Seychelles annual underwater festival
celebrating the underwater world, through a range of diving and
snorkeling activities, and creating awareness with evening programs
of film, video and slide
presentations by acclaimed local and international guest speakers.
SUBIOS, the Indian Ocean Underwater Festival was
initiated in 1989 by two local dive professionals, Mr. David
Rowat and Mr. Philippe Blanchard with the support of Mrs. Maryse
Eichler, who was the Manageress of the then Beau Vallon Bay Hotel.
Initially, the festival was organised jointly with other members
of the Association of Professional Divers Seychelles (APDS) with
the assistance of the Festival of Antibes in the persons of Mr.
Daniel Mercier and Mr. Pierre Coton.

These activities are not only dedicated at promoting
marine-based tourism in Seychelles, but also at sensitising the
local population on the importance and role of the marine world
and in particular our marine life.
In Seychelles, schoolchildren are encouraged to
take part in the different activities organised such as painting
and essay competitions which are normally based on a certain
theme. The decerning participants are then presented with attractive
prizes.

As part of the festival there are also underwater
film and photography contests.
The SUBIOS photography and video competitions are open to individuals from all over the world, with separate awards given for the best overall images and the best images taken in Seychelles.
Winning foreign entries will be awarded with a return air ticket to Seychelles and five days of accommodation on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Local winners will be awarded a return ticket to an overseas underwater festival.
