Air Seychelles, the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, has increased its interisland flights between Mahé and Bird Island to daily, providing residents and international travellers with more choice and convenience.

The development will see Air Seychelles operate flights to the Bird island 340 days a year, representing a major upgrade to its current charter operation.

The service has been upgraded following an agreement signed between Roy Kinnear, Chief Executive Officer at Air Seychelles and Alex Savy, owner and manager of the island resort.

Lying roughly 100km north of Mahé, Bird Island is a small coral island known for its spectacular birdlife, the highlight of which is a colony of more than a million sooty terns that nest there every year, along with many other seabirds, such as frigates and wedge-tailed shearwaters.

Along with being a private bird sanctuary, the island has 24 nature-friendly beach chalets offering leisure travellers and bird-lovers a memorable tropical escape.

Roy Kinnear, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles said: “Home to tens of thousands of migratory sea birds at any one time, Bird Island is a truly unique destination that offers travellers a one-of-a-kind experience in Seychelles.

“We’re delighted to sign this agreement, which will enhance air access to Bird Island, increase its exposure in the world tourism market and provide international visitors with better and more frequent connections.

“With charter services to numerous islands in the Seychelles archipelago, from Frégate to D’Arros, we’re proud that Air Seychelles plays an important role in enabling people to discover the far-off reaches of our country.”

Alex Savy said: “Bird Island is growing increasingly popular with international guests and signing this agreement with our national carrier, Air Seychelles, will provide them with fantastic air links every day of the week.

“With a large year-round population of more than 20 bird species, perfect sandy beaches, and not to mention Esmeralda, the largest land tortoise in the world, Bird Island makes for an unforgettable holiday for any traveller interested in nature.”

The new flights started on 1 August, 2016 and are available for purchase from the Bird Island Lodge Office located at the Inter Island Quay on Mahe.
